The Library Council is a group of art and book enthusiasts whose contributions benefit the Museum’s Archives, Library, and Research Collections. Council members support the Museum’s mission to acquire, preserve, and make accessible research collections representing art and cultural history in the 20th and 21st centuries.
As one of the world’s most important resources on modern and contemporary art, MoMA Archives and Library collections are made available to an international community of researchers in The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building and online through digital access.
The Library Council regularly publishes a limited edition artist’s book, which gives artists an opportunity to experiment with the book as an art form. These projects have featured work by Beatriz Milhazes, Vija Celmins and Eliot Weinberger, Gabriel Orozco, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Olafur Eliasson, Doug Aitken, Yun-Fei Ji, Abelardo Morell, Ted Muehling, and Oliver Sacks, Ranjani Shettar and Anita Desai, Annette Messager, and Jean-Philippe Toussaint, R. H. Quaytman and Susan Howe, and Guillermo Kuitca. The most recent publication is a collective project called The Valise with over 50 original artworks by the artists Johanna Calle, Matías Duville, Maria Laet, Mateo López, Nicolás Paris, Rosângela Rennó, and Christian Vinck Henriquez, responding to a novel by César Aira.
Library Council members are occasionally invited to events ranging from intimate private collection and studio visits to exhibition walk-throughs. As a benefit of membership, Council members may choose to receive the artist’s edition published during their membership year.
